When my siblings and I were little, our mother would slather us in sunscreen whenever we went outdoors. “You’ll thank me for this one day,” she would tell us as she rubbed on the SPF. Unlike my sisters, I was blessed with olive skin and didn’t experience my first sunburn until I was 13, spring breaking in Florida. My mom asked if I’d reapplied my sunscreen and, wanting to stay in the water, I lied. When I couldn’t sleep that night because I hurt everywhere my mom informed me that it was a sunburn. “You need to take care of your skin, Jenn,” she told me as she rubbed aloe on my back, “it’s the only skin you’ll ever have.” And she was right. At 30 it’s becoming pretty obvious who grew up wearing sunscreen and who didn’t. Whenever I’m complimented on my skin, I give full credit to my mom and her bottles and bottles of sunscreen.

I was introduced to Mott 50 by Anne, one of the co-founders and owners of the company. Blending sun protection with fashion, Mott 50 makes guarding your skin from harmful rays look good! Each piece of clothing offers a UPF protection of 50 or higher (most clothes only offer a UPF protection of 5.) While sun protective clothing isn’t hard to find in athletic clothes the idea of adding UPF protection to everyday pieces is brilliant – especially for travelers! Below are three of my favorite Mott 50 travel pieces.

breylatoasta_6The Brela Open Cardigan (pictured in toast) is a fantastic layering piece to bring on your next trip. Whether you’re strolling the streets of Paris, looking for the Big Five on safari or exploring ancient ruins in Peru the Brela, and the many ways in which it can be worn, will protect you without sacrificing style. It also packs small and may come to the rescue on a chilly flight. There are also thumb holes to protect the tops of your hands, an area that seems to age way faster than we would like!

SwimMPThe Santa Cruz Swim Dress (pictured in lilac) is a stylish way to cover up at the beach or pool and still be water ready! If you’re like me, then you can’t be at the beach without having your toes in the surf so why not let the Santa Cruz protect you as the powerful sun reflects off the water? Or go nuts! Submerge in this swim dress and play in the waves. The quick-drying fabric won’t weigh you down when you return to the shore. Pair with the Billy Straw Hat (pictured in natural) to complete your stylish beach look that is sure to be the envy of everyone at the resort!

AccessoriesMP2The Girandella Infinity Scarf (pictured in toast/white stripe) and Hillary Infinity Scarf is an absolute “must pack” item! You can really get creative with this soft, breathable, multi-purpose piece, too! Wrap it around twice and wear it as a chunky scarf or drape it over your shoulders and wear it as a wrap. Wear it to the beach, to a picnic, on a city walking tour or to a day at the market and you’ll be sure to turn some heads while protecting your skin. Oh! And be sure to pack this one in your carryon – it makes a fantastic blanket for a plane nap!

Need another reason to purchase a stylish Mott 50 item? A portion of the company’s profits are donated to melanoma research and sun protection education. A Lady Away especially loves companies who give back!
