Irene, my good friend in Kenya, always says the same thing to new visitors to her country: “Whatever you thought about Kenya,” she advises, “forget it! Forget all of your expectations right now!”
And it’s sage advice to anyone visiting or experiencing a new destination. When I travel, I try hard not to have expectations – to accept each new experience as it happens to me and appreciate it for what it is. In doing so, I find that I’m never disappointed and always pleasantly surprised. I didn’t have any expectations for my DTour beyond the thrill of experiencing new places and still, when I look on all of the photos that I’ve posted in the past week or so I can scarcely believe that I am the one experiencing this amazing adventure!
I’ve become that girl on social media that I love to hate – the one who is always posting about how incredible her life is. The one who you secretly resent as you click through her photos on your lunch break, with equal parts awe and envy.
